It's time to celebrate
being a girl.

Our Program

Mission

We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running

About

Girls on the Run® is a life-changing, experiential learning programs for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development..

Objective

The objective of Girls on the Run is to educate and empower girls at an early age in order to prevent the display of at-risk activities in the future. At risk activities include substance/alcohol use, eating disorders, early onset of sexual activity, sedentary lifestyle, depression, suicide attempts and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.

The Program

The curriculum that our coaches use provides a forum for girls to discuss and make choices about physical fitness, good eating habits, saying "no" to drugs, values, positive communication, and community service. We will teach this curriculum by focusing on these three broad areas:

• Understanding ourselves and setting personal goals
• Learning skills to get along in a group
• Examining our responsibility and voice in the community

Curricula Organization

The curriculum is divided into three parts:

The first eight lessons are centered on the girls getting to know themselves. Examining their values, their likes and dislikes, and who they envision themselves to be. As the girls get to know themselves, they are also sharing with each other. Lesson topics and learning goals include "fueling our healthy pace", "centering: the importance of slowing down" and "celebrating gratitude."
The next eight lessons concentrate on team building, being supportive, learning to listen and cooperate, etc. Lesson topics and learning goals include "standing up to peer pressure", "gossiping hurts everyone" and "it's okay to choose my friends."
The last eight lessons relate to the world at large. This includes making a contribution to your community and learning to recognize and deal with the negative messages we often receive from the world (media awareness, negative peer pressure, etc.) Lesson topics and learning goals include: "learning about community", "tuning into a new message (media literacy)" and the development and implementation of a group community project.

The 24 lessons conclude with the opportunity to participate in a 5k event.

Seasonal Programming

Girls on the Run sessions are offered in the fall or in the spring.

Fall Session: Ten or Twelve-week program meeting once or twice a week (September-December)
Spring Session: Ten or Twelve-week program meeting once or twice a week from (Feburary-May)

How long is the program?

Each session is 10-12 weeks long. Sessions are in the spring (Feburary to May) and fall (September - November). The girls meet once or twice a week for one or two hours after school filled with fun activities to develop running and life skills.

What's our objective?

We provide a safe environment where girls can express themselves, build confidence, and learn from each other. We believe it is critical to reach girls at an early age in order to teach them these important life lessons and to prevent at-risk behavior such as

eating disorders, substance abuse, depression, obesity, and adolescent pregnancies.

Why should my daughter be a part of GOTR?

We challenge each girl to celebrate her mind, body and spirit by being her goofy, unique-spirited self. We believe that you can find your inner strength by running, skipping, sprinting, hopping, dashing, leaping, gliding, rolling, or cart wheeling all the way to the finish line!

What Will My Daughter Learn?

The curriculum that our coaches use provides a forum for girls to discuss and make choices about physical fitness, good eating habits, saying "no" to drugs, values, positive communication, and community service. We will teach this curriculum by focusing on these three broad areas:

• Understanding ourselves and setting personal goals
• Learning skills to get along in a group
• Examining our responsibility and voice in the community

Who Will Be My Daughter's Coach?

Our dedicated coaches have been specially trained to facilitate learning sessions, mentor girls and build a team of girls who believe in themselves.

How Many Girls Can Participate?

Each program has room for up to 15 girls. Each group will have at least one coach and one-two assistant coaches.

How Much Does It Cost?

The actual out of pocket cost to the GOTR program is approximately $160 per girl for the weekly 10-12 week program. This $160 covers the full cost of one child's participation which includes:

• 20-24 lessons conducted by certified GOTR coaches
• Official GOTR T-shirt
• A water bottle
• Participation in a 5K Celebration Event
• A healthy snack at each practice

A family that can afford to pay $160 is asked to pay the full amount. Participants of Girls on the Run and their families who cannot afford to pay $160 choose a program fee ranging from $0 to $160. Girls participate equally in the program regardless of the fee the family selects. Girls must complete the program to receive all benefits noted above. The following scale is provided for families to choose what they believe they can afford. It is essential that each family contribute as much as it can afford. Local fund raising efforts and donations help bridge the gap between the program fees paid and necessary sponsorship.

Families that have the ability to and are interested in supporting the program beyond the $160 may choose to sponsor additional girls as well.

Fees / Family income:

$160 Greater than $50,000
$120 $49,000-$30,000
$ 75 $29,999-$20,000
$ 35 Less than $19,999

Refund of Registration Fee?

GOTR SL will refund 50% of the registration fee if requested in writing prior to the 4th lesson of a GOTR SL program. No refunds will be issued for any terminations after the 4th lesson except in the event that an unforeseen illness or health issue arises after the 4th lesson. Such instances will be handled on a case by case basis and discussion and review will be held prior to refunding 50% of the registration fee. If a site is canceled due to insufficient registration or other circumstances deemed appropriate by the Director, the full registration will be refunded.
